Top 7 free browser games 2014

Realm of the Mad God

Realm of the Mad God by Kabam sees you, and everyone else online, do battle against the Mad God Oryx—though the path to victory includes a legion of bullets and baddies.

Described as a Bullet Hell (read: lots of projectiles on the screen simultaneously) MMORPG, this 8-bit game is a lot of fun to play. If only we could figure out how to make it go full-screen.

Wonderputt

This adventure mini-golf game requires you to line up your shots and make par on a cartoonish floating island, where new holes are revealed as you play. Wonderputt is another game that landed on mobile first, but it's still fun to play in the browser. Just make sure you're aiming the ball in the right direction before you shoot.

The original is on Kongregate, but the app in the Chrome Web Store will take you to an embedded version of the game on Forevergamer.net.

Rad Soldiers

Originally for iOS, this turn-based strategy game lets you create a team of soldiers to do battle against the computer or other people online. Each soldier also has their own special ability to help take down the enemy. As you progress you unlock new soldiers, weapons and other digital goodies.

Unlike most of the games in this roundup, Rad Soldiers is a Chrome packaged app, rather than a website. Packaged apps are special instances of the Chrome browser that run as if they were desktop apps and will also work offline, though they require Chrome to run and install.

Ballistic

Forget Flash games. Ballistic is a modern 3D first-person shooter you can play right within your browser, albeit only in browsers that have the Unity plugin installed. Look at those graphics.

Ballistic plays a bit like the rock-paper-scissors of Team Fortress 2, with numerous classes available, each built for an entirely different style of play. Freeloaders, alas, start with a single class: The Vanguard, who's your middle-of-the-road, default assault rifle class with average armor and mobility. Intrigued? Hayden Dingman's hands-on with Ballistic has all the details you need to know.

Tanki Online

The first of two tank battle games in this round-up, Tanki Online is a 3D tank-shooter where you battle other players around the world in a fight to the mechanized death. The game claims over 26 million players, and as one former California governor will tell you, driving a tank is fun.

Polycraft

A 3D action tower defense game, Polycraft begins with our hero stranded on an island where Ferals battle Wildlings (no relation to the Game of Thrones kind). To survive, you must build your new surroundings and face the onslaught from the island's creatures.

Like many games of its kind, Polycraft isn't just looking to entertain, but also to part you from your money to progress faster in the game.

Knight's Fable

Knight's Fable is an exciting new free-to-play browser MMORPG with epic turn-based battles set in a world of amazing detail. Enjoy the splendid graphics as you capture beasts, train heroes, and discover ancient items of great power! Join in PvP combat in the arena or simply duke it out with the minions of hell in fast paced PvE combat!

Knight's Fable sends you on an epic quest all within your browser as you pick a class, fight countless enemies and upgrade equipment in a colourful game world.
